One American man is thanking his lucky stars after he mistakenly guessed his wife's clothing size — and her reaction was better than expected.
The man, who goes by Flubby1982 on Imgur, posted a meme on the photo-sharing site on Monday, titling it 'Dumb Husband's being dumb worked out.' In the caption, he explained how what could have been a very awkward Christmas morning ended up being a turning point for his wife that resulted in a happy ending.
He recalled the time, five years ago, that he accidentally purchased pajamas for his wife that were too small. Instead of being upset, though, his wife was flattered — and went on to change her lifestyle so she'd fit into those PJs.
Lucky: A man took to Reddit to share a story about how a Christmas shopping mistake inspired his wife to change her lifestyle
Flubby1982 used the Awkward Moment Seal meme to set up his story, revealing how he accidentally helped his wife to shed some weight through a random mistake.
'Go to store to buy wife PJs for X-mas. Forget her size so I guess and buy one that is 2 sizes smaller,' he wrote. 'Starts wife on five year exercise and weight loss.'
Ironically, the meme seems somewhat sexist upon first glance - particularly as the Awkward Moment Seal is more typically used to describe a socially awkward or uncomfortable situation.
However, any sexist connotations quickly evaporated after the man launched into the details of the story, beginning by saying that he and his wife have been 'wonderfully, happily married' for nearly 20 years.
In that time, they both let themselves go. They both work and are raising three children, which has made healthy eating and exercise less of a priority.
'And fellas the damage kids can do to a woman's body is pretty crazy,' he added. 'If that happened to men I am sure we would have died out as a species long ago because I am not sure I could do that.'
Whoops! He forgot her size while shopping for pajamas for her, and guessed a size that was too small
Several years ago, Flubby1982 started taking better care of himself. His wife, though, was less interested in doing so, and he wasn't prepared to say or do anything about it and risk hurting her.
Then, five years ago, she wanted new pajamas for Christmas, so Flubby1982 went buy them for her.
'You can imagine my panic when I realized I really didn't know her size. I thought she was a specific size, but I decided right then to just hedge my bet and get something smaller just in case,' he said.
When she opened the PJs on Christmas, she loved his choice — but was surprised by the size he picked.
'She looks at the tag to check the size and I see her eyes light up. I ask if everything is OK and she says "Do you honestly think this is my size?"
Good save! She was so flattered that he saw her that way that she began to diet and exercise and lost a lot of weight
He remembered a lesson is grandpa taught him: If your wife seems angry, ask her if she lost weight. He decided to take that approach.
'[I] said: "I thought you are size X, but you look like you have been loosing weight and when I held this up it looks like it would fit perfectly,"' he recalled. 'She got up, came over to me and almost had tears in her eyes. "It means a lot to me that you see me like that because I sure don't."'
She was so flattered that, rather than return the PJs, she started shedding weight to fit into them. She began working out and eating better, and five years later 'she is smoking hot (way too hot to be married ot me now!) and has blown by me in terms of fitness.'
'She even to this today says she works out hard so "I can actually be as hot as my husband thinks I am,"' he said.
Though his mistake had an unintended positive outcome, he joked: 'I do feel though that my grandpa is looking down on me and saying that is not what he meant.'
