Police have arrested a man who was allegedly drunk when he was driving at speeds of 155mph down a Georgia highway.

Dwayne Pope claimed that he had only had three shots of champagne when he was pulled over on Sunday after speeding down Georgia highway 400.

An Alpharetta police officer was driving along the interstate when Pope blazed by her at speeds of 105mph in an McLaren sports car. The speed limit is 65mph.

The officer turned on her emergency lights and failed to pull the man over initially.

He kept speeding, reaching 155mph and weaving in and out of traffic while braking abruptly.

In a matter of seconds, Pope braked down to zero and pulled over to the side of the road near the Northridge Road exit.

When she approached his vehicle the officer reportedly found a man with bloodshot and watery eyes behind the wheel, reeking of alcohol.

Pope told police that he hadn't seen the blue lights or heard the sirens from the police vehicle. 

Failing several sobriety test, Pope was arrested for DUI, speeding, failure to maintain lane and expired tags. 

'This could have been extremely bad, not only for himself, but also for the family out there driving, who's trying to get home,'said Alpharetta Police spokesman Jason Muenzer said to WSB-TV. 

'We're just thankful everybody was able to go home that night safely.'
