Donald Trump described some migrants as 'animals' Wednesday, in a charged discussion about the border wall and law enforcement.

'We have people coming in to the country, or trying to come in,' Trump told California Republicans visiting the White House, 'we are taking people out of the country.

'You wouldn't believe how bad these people are, these aren't people, these are animals and we're taking them out of the country.'

Trump's remarks came after comments on migration and law enforcement, so-called 'sanctuary cities' for immigrants, and the MS-13 gang.

Trump has often painted members of MS13, a gang that originated in the United States but with roots in El Salvador, as 'vicious' and 'killers'.

He has often conflated the gang with immigrants in general. His most recent comment was swiftly condemned by Democrats.

'Immigrants are human beings. Not animals, not criminals, not drug dealers, not rapists. They are human beings,' said Colorado Congressman Jared Polis.

California Governor Jerry Brown said 'Trump is lying on immigration, lying about crime and lying about the laws of California.'

'Flying in a dozen Republican politicians to flatter him and praise his reckless policies changes nothing. We, the citizens of the fifth largest economy in the world, are not impressed,' he said.

He had also suggested to Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday that the California mayor who warned illegal immigrants about an ICE raid be charged with obstruction of justice.

Trump said during a round table at the White House on sanctuary cities that the Department of Justice should consider penalizing Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf for her conduct.

'You talk about obstruction of justice, I would recommend that you look into obstruction of justice for the mayor of Oakland, California, Jeff,' the president told him.

The president claimed during the meeting with Californians that the ICE Director and Homeland Security chief also attended that Schaaf told 1,000 illegal immigrants to 'get out of here' before the raid.

'To me, that's obstruction of justice. And perhaps the Department of Justice can look into that with respect to the mayor, because it's a big deal out there, and a lot of people are very angry about what happened.'

The president said, 'That was a terrible thing.'

The Department of Justice said after the raid that it would launch an investigation.

Trump said in April at a tax round table that he didn't just want a probe, he thought she should be hit with criminal charges.

'How about the mayor of Oakland, where she tells a thousand people to get going, law enforcement's coming to get you,' he said then. 'And this was all planned. And many of them scattered.'

'To me that's obstruction of justice, and something should happen there. And it hasn't and I don't know why it hasn't,' Trump said.

On Wednesday Trump also mocked California Gov. Jerry Brown, noting that the Democrat may try to run for president in 2020.

He invited Brown to 'please run' for higher office during the roundtable discussion.

Trump fired back on Twitter, saying that Trump 'is lying on immigration, lying about crime and lying about the laws of CA.

'Flying in a dozen Republican politicians to flatter him and praise his reckless policies changes nothing. We, the citizens of the fifth largest economy in the world, are not impressed,' they said.
